An Analysis of the Tannery Waste Water

Abstract
To study the amount and quality of waste water from the different stages of processing in leather factory, the writer selected a factory out of 9 representative factories which produce more than 90% of leather products in Korea.
This study was carried out during the period July 20 to September 20, 1973, and findings obtained are as follows.
1. Through the whole processing of 1 kilogramme of raw material, 25 litters of waste water is discharged; 12 litters in pretanning stage and 13 litters in tanning stage.
2. Tere are 12 separate processing. 44% of the total waste water are discharged during the course of soaking and washing.
3. The highest concentration of BOD was found in liming process with 4,300 ppm; and the waste water discharged in the process of tanning process showed an average BOD 6,670 ppm.
4. The quality of waste water discharged from each process showed the different findings. The waste water from cow skin processing which discharges the effluent intermittently showed the highest pollution. Contrary to this, relatively lower concentration of pollution is observed in the waste water which is discharged in the same processing system where mechanical operation with constant flow of washing water is employed.
5. The waste water discharged from pretanning stage was alkalic and the waste water from tanning process was acidic. The final waste water showed pH 7.1
6. The ratio between BOD and COD of the final waste water is 1.16. Therefore, it is assumed that there is still large quantity of organic substances which can further oxidized through the application of bacteria in the mixed waste water.
7. According to the result of study, the total amount of waste water discharged by all leather factories in Korea is estimated as high as 2,650,000 cubic motors with total BOD 2,704 tons by the year of 1980.
